We make every effort to comply with the most exacting environmental and quality standards. Environmental protection initiatives are part of our daily working practice both at our premises and at the construction site.
In 2010, PBG joined the international Carbon Disclosure Project, designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and counteract climate change.
Examples of our CSR activities that benefit environment:
Trigeneration
We launched a block CHP cogeneration plant on our premises in 2002. In 2006, we decided to use an absorption water chiller for cooling. The trigeneration system produces electricity and heat (as a by-product), which is used to warm buildings and water. Excess heat is cooled, thus making it possible to avoid the use of energy-consuming compressor water chillers. We rely on natural gas, the cleanest fossil fuel, to power the plant, which helps reduce carbon emissions. This is our contribution to the pursuit of a target set for Poland to generate 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
White-tailed eagle
In 2011 we struck a partnership with the Eagle Protection Committee (EPC), a non-governmental public benefit organisation, thus becoming involved in a long-term project to protect the white-tailed eagle. The majestic eagle is the largest bird in Poland: it can weigh around five kilos and has a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres. One such pair nests at a PBG site in the region of Lubiatów-Międzychód-Grotów (area protected under the NATURA 2000). As it fits perfectly with our strategy of sustainable growth, the cooperation with the EPC will be continued. We want to protect the natural environment and preserve it possibly intact for future generations.
Feast of the Forest
On October 10th 2011, during inauguration of the Feast of the Tree, a pro-environmental education campaign organised by Klub Gaja, which we joined this year, we planted some 150 saplings of broadleaved trees and shrubs, such as birches, grey alders, spindle-trees, plum-trees, blackthorns and briar-roses on our premises in Wysogotowo. We plan to continue the initiative in spring and plant saplings of coniferous trees.
This year the Feast of Tree programme is under the patronage of the Minister of the Environment, the Minister of National Education, the President of the Capital City of Warsaw and the Marshal of the Katowice Province. The programme is part of the Plant for the Planet: Billion Trees Campaign under the aegis of UNEP (UN) and the International Year of Forests.
Planting trees is still one of the most cost-effective methods to fight climate change. We are glad that we could join the effort.
Use of raw and other materials
In order to protect the environment we limit the consumption of:
- electricity: energy-saving light bulbs and the trigeneration system,
- natural gas: weather compensators in the boiler houses,
- fuel: eco driving, videoconferences
- water: tap aerators, dishwashers and double flush toilets,
- paper: the Virtual Desk (electronic document circulation system), the Print Room (mass printing unit), bulk orders for materials used in project construction.
Furthermore, waste is sorted into special containers for municipal waste, waste paper, technology waste, used toner cartridges and batteries.
